Getting oil stains out of a Pakenham driveway.
The one job where the honest answer is a percentage, not a yes. Oil goes down into concrete and keeps going. Here is what actually shifts it, what does not, and what a realistic result looks like on a stain that has been there for years.
Oil is not on your driveway. It is in it.
This is the thing that explains every other answer on this page. Concrete looks solid but it is a porous, capillary structure. When engine oil, gearbox fluid or diesel lands on it, surface tension pulls it down into those capillaries and it keeps migrating, slowly, for as long as it is there. A drip that landed in 2023 is not a mark on the surface. It is a three dimensional stain going down into the slab, and the visible patch on top is just the part you can see.
That is why the timing matters more than almost anything else. Catch a fresh spill within days, before it has wicked far, and it comes out close to completely. Blasting it. Which is what most people try first.
The instinct is to hit an oil stain with as much pressure as possible. It fails, for a reason that is worth understanding: oil and water do not mix. You can put 3,000 PSI of cold water at that stain all afternoon and the water will not carry the oil out of the pores, because there is no chemical relationship between them. What actually happens is that the pressure pushes the oil sideways into the clean concrete around the edges, so the stain gets bigger and more diffuse, and pushes some of it deeper.
Then there is the second problem. Concentrating high pressure on one spot etches it. You end up with a lighter, rougher, cleaner-looking patch shaped exactly like the stain you were trying to remove, which now shows up from a different angle and in different light, permanently. We get called to plenty of these. Cat litter is the other classic: excellent on a fresh spill in the first hour, completely useless a week later because there is nothing left on the surface to absorb. Chemistry, heat, dwell, then extraction.
The method that actually shifts oil has four parts and pressure is the least important of them.
- A degreaser that emulsifies. This is the whole trick. A proper alkaline degreaser chemically bridges oil and water so the oil can be carried out in the rinse. Without this step nothing else matters.
- Heat. Hot water at around 80 degrees drops the viscosity of the oil so it becomes mobile enough to move up and out of the capillaries rather than sitting there like treacle. Cold water units simply cannot do this, which is a real equipment difference.
- Dwell time. The degreaser needs to sit and work its way down. Rushing this is the single most common reason a job under-delivers, and it is exactly the corner a cheap quote cuts, because dwell time is time on site.
- Extraction, not dispersal. Once the oil is emulsified it has to leave the site, recovered with a wet vacuum. If it just runs to the kerb you have not cleaned the driveway, you have relocated the problem into a creek.
For genuinely deep old stains there is a fifth option: a poultice. A thick absorbent paste is spread over the stain and left for 24 to 48 hours, and as it dries it draws the oil up out of the slab into itself. It is slow, it needs a return visit, and it is the only thing that reaches oil that has migrated deep. It is also the only honest answer for a six year old sump shadow.
Exposed aggregate is the hard one, and Pakenham is full of it.
Walk through Cardinia Lakes, Lakeside, Pakenham East or the newer Officer estates and exposed aggregate is the default driveway. It looks great and it is genuinely the worst surface to get oil out of. The open texture means far more surface area for oil to grip and endless voids between the stones for it to hide in. Worse, it cannot take aggressive mechanical attention, because what you would be attacking is the cement matrix holding the stones in place, and once a stone is dislodged there is no putting it back. Under AS 3727.1, the guide to residential pavements, a driveway like this is a domestic slab with a decorative finish on top, and that finish is only the top few millimetres. Grind it away chasing a stain and there is no refinishing it, only replacing the slab.
So aggregate takes longer, needs more dwell and more passes, and lands nearer the 70 per cent end of the reduction range than the 90. Plain broom-finished concrete, common on the older Beaconsfield and Berwick homes, is more forgiving. Honed or polished concrete is easiest of all because there is barely any texture for oil to hold onto, though it is also the surface where any etching from a previous over-enthusiastic blast is most obvious.
Where the oily run-off has to go.
Anywhere except the kerb. The stormwater pit outside your Pakenham house discharges, untreated, to Toomuc Creek, Deep Creek or Cardinia Creek and from there into Western Port, a Ramsar listed wetland. A driveway’s worth of emulsified sump oil arriving there is a visible slick, and under the General Environmental Duty in the Victorian Environment Protection Act 2017 that is a problem for the person conducting the activity, which includes you as the property owner, not only the contractor. In practice, on an oily job we cover the stormwater pit, bund the low side of the work area, and recover the wash water with a wet vacuum for lawful disposal. It adds time. That time is part of why an oily driveway clean is quoted higher than a plain one, and it is the first thing a cheap operator skips.
Worked example: a Cardinia Lakes driveway with a two year gearbox leak.
A 55 square metre exposed aggregate driveway, with a dark patch roughly a metre square where a car with a slow gearbox leak sat for two years, plus general spotting. The job is a hot degreaser application with a long dwell, two passes with the surface cleaner, a targeted second treatment on the main patch, and full run-off recovery over the pit. Quoted at $340 given the oil load. Realistic outcome: the general spotting goes completely, and the main patch reduces about 80 per cent to a faint shadow you would only notice if you knew. If the owner wants it closer to gone, a poultice on the main patch over a return visit gets it to perhaps 90. Sealing afterwards at about $8 per square metre, so around $440, is worth it here because a sealed slab will not let the next leak get in. Full ranges are on our pricing guide.

Can old oil stains be removed from a Pakenham driveway?
Reduced dramatically, yes. Removed to invisible, usually not, and anyone promising that on a years-old stain is overselling. Concrete is porous, so oil does not sit on top, it wicks down into the slab and keeps migrating for as long as it is there. On a stain older than about two years a realistic result is a 70 to 90 per cent reduction, which in practice means a faint shadow you have to know about to see. Fresh spills, caught within days, come out close to completely.
Does high pressure remove oil from concrete?
No, and it usually makes things worse in two ways. Pressure alone cannot lift oil out of the pore structure, because oil and water do not mix, so blasting mostly just spreads the stain sideways into clean concrete around the edges and drives some of it deeper. It also etches the surface where you concentrate on the stain, leaving a lighter, rougher patch that is now visible from a different angle even once the oil is gone. Oil removal is chemistry and heat: a degreaser that emulsifies the oil, dwell time to let it work, hot water to keep it mobile, and then extraction.
How much does oil stain removal cost in Pakenham?
A standard double driveway with light spotting cleans up within the normal $180 to $320 driveway range. A driveway with real oil, the kind that comes from a long term gearbox or sump leak parked in the same spot, sits at $300 to $500 because of the degreaser, the dwell time, multiple passes and the run-off recovery. Deep old stains that need a poultice treatment, which is drawn out over 24 to 48 hours, add to that. Sealing afterwards is $6 to $12 per square metre and is genuinely worth it on a driveway that has been through this.
Is exposed aggregate harder to get oil out of?
Yes, noticeably, and a lot of Pakenham has it. Exposed aggregate has an open textured surface with voids between the stones, so oil has far more surface area to grip and far more places to hide from a surface cleaner. It also cannot take aggressive mechanical attention, because the cement matrix holding those stones is what you would be attacking, and once you dislodge stones there is no putting them back. Aggregate takes longer, needs more dwell and more passes, and honestly lands nearer the 70 per cent end of the reduction range than the 90.
Where does the oily water go when you clean a driveway?
Not down the kerb drain, because that runs to Toomuc Creek and on into Western Port.
