Slippery paths, spilled fuel and storm mud in Pakenham: the first hour.
- Rope off the slip. A bin, a chair, a hose reel across the mossy section. Most falls happen because someone takes the path they always take.
- Stop and dam a spill. Shut the source off, then ring the spill with sand, soil or cat litter so it cannot reach the kerb. Never hose it toward the drain.

What makes it worse in the next hour.
Nearly every emergency we attend has been made two or three hundred dollars more expensive by something well meant in the first hour. These are the four we see most across the shire.
Hosing a spill. Water does not dilute oil, it carries it. A litre of chainsaw fuel that would have soaked into half a bag of cat litter becomes a slick across 40 square metres of driveway and a plume in the kerb. Once it is in the pit it is out of your hands and into a creek, and the general environmental duty in the Victorian Environment Protection Act 2017 makes managing it your problem, not the council’s. Bleach out of a spray bottle onto render. Household bleach at the wrong dilution burns acrylic texture coat, lightens the pigment unevenly and leaves a pale halo that no amount of later washing removes. The wall then needs repainting, which on a single-storey Pakenham home runs $8,000 to $15,000 in 2026, against $350 to $600 for the soft wash you were trying to avoid.
A borrowed pressure washer at full trigger on a roof or on fibro. Anything built before 1990, which covers a lot of the older Pakenham township streets and most farm sheds out toward Nar Nar Goon, can contain asbestos cement in eaves, sheds and old fencing. Victorian occupational health and safety regulations prohibit high-pressure water on asbestos-containing material outright, and for good reason. On roof tiles, high pressure strips the factory glaze and drives water under the laps into the ceiling.
Letting storm silt dry. The heavy grey clay through the Cardinia flats and the old Koo Wee Rup swamp fringe goes from shovel-able to chisel-able in about a day and a half of dry weather. - Barricade a slippery path and lay a temporary mat or a strip of shade cloth over the worst of it.
- Dam and absorb a spill with sand, soil, cat litter or a $25 spill kit, then bag it and put it in the general rubbish, never the green bin.
- Squeegee and shovel wet storm silt off a driveway or out of a garage.

- Clear a ground-level drain grate of leaf litter with a gloved hand.
Do not do this
- Climb onto a wet roof. Victorian rules treat a fall risk above 2 metres as high risk work needing proper fall protection, and a wet tile roof at 22.5 degrees is a slide.
- Point a pressure washer at old fibro, super six sheeting or unsealed eaves on a pre-1990 house.
- Run high pressure across render, painted weatherboard or roof tiles. That is exactly what soft washing exists for.
- Use a pressure washer within reach of live electrical gear: meter boxes, pool pumps, garden lighting transformers, solar isolators.
- Wash down anything oily where the run-off can reach a kerb, a pit or a table drain.

After hours versus Monday: the actual numbers.
Our normal window is Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm. Inside that window a job is priced purely off the work: $80 to $250 for paths and steps, $180 to $320 for a standard double driveway, $250 to $600 for a storm silt clean-out, $150 to $350 for a gutter and roof debris clear.
Outside it, two loadings apply. Same-day priority is $120 on top, because it means pulling a rig off a booked job and rescheduling somebody else. Evening, Sunday and public holiday attendance is a $180 call-out on top of the job price. Put those against a $250 path clean and you are paying $370 to $550 for something that would cost $250 on Tuesday morning.
So the arithmetic is simple. If the hazard can be barricaded, barricade it and book a weekday slot. If it cannot, pay the loading, because a fall on a wet Pakenham path in July costs more than any number on this page. The clear cases for paying the premium are a spill you cannot contain, a slip hazard on the only accessible entry to a home, storm silt that is still wet, a commercial site that has to trade in the morning, and fresh graffiti on a shopfront.
Commercial callers get a different calculation again. On a car park or a shopfront apron, closing a bay for an extra day usually costs more than the $180 loading, which is why most of our commercial work is scheduled after close anyway.
